Day 7: Building Environments and Painting Characters
Documentation: |
Planning and Developing CraftThe photos above show a student's plan in relation to her subsequent work of art. In her sketch she labeled foreground, middle ground, and background, the specific materials she planned to use, and the means by which she intended to construct. As a result, she knew exactly what to do and where to begin when it was time to build. Throughout the building process and through exploration of materials, she found ways of making her environment look even more aesthetically diverse and dynamic, carefully calculating the way each element might add or detract from her overall design.
Artistic Intention: Character-Specific Settings
Featured below is a student's interpretation of an ideal room for the cat character he created in part one of this project. He kept finding things in our box of found objects and thinking, "Wow, I bet my cat would really like this!" The room evolved as he explored materials while keeping his cat's interests in mind.
Aesthetic Decisions: Materials, Forms, and Function
Featured in this video is a finished city-scape in which a giant will wreak havoc! The artist talks about his decisions to use the cardboard and tape and other found objects in the way he did to achieve his desired aesthetic effect.Where are we now and where are we going? At the end of class Emily had students tell us, by show of hands, who was finished with their settings, who still had to paint, and who was still in the process of construction. This helped us determine which materials we needed to bring for the next class. Emily also informed students of our ultimate end with these projects being stop-motion animation. This served to help inform any final aesthetic decisions within student's settings and to spark the notion of storytelling for next week's lesson.
